Do's and Don'ts for Navarre CERT Members

Don’t wear your CERT vest or County ID badge unless you are on duty and officially participating in a Navarre CERT event or activation.

Do remember that when you are participating in a Navarre CERT event or activation, your behavior reflects on the entire team as well as the CERT program in the county and even the national program.

Don't confront or argue with members of the public or the team when you are representing CERT. If there are difficult situations, involve your strike team leader, section chief, or team coordinator.

Do smile and be pleasant when interacting with the public.

Do remember that we are not sworn law enforcement personnel or professional first responders. If you see a public safety hazard or illegal conduct (for example, a drunk driver), contact the Sheriff’s Office personnel on duty or call 911.

Don't talk or write to the press regarding Navarre CERT. Always refer them to the team coordinator or media/public relations coordinator.

Do behave ethically, observe safety procedures, follow the chain of command and directions received from your immediate leader.

Don't consume alcoholic beverages, use illegal drugs (or medications that may impair your judgment or ability to perform), or carry firearms or other weapons on your person while on duty as a Navarre CERT team member.

Don't report for duty if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Procedures for Resolving Disciplinary Issues

  • Anyone may initiate a disciplinary investigation by contacting any Navarre CERT board member and making a request. The board member will acquire the accuser’s contact information and initiate a special meeting in accordance with the procedures as stated in the by-laws. The accuser must be present at the meeting. The accused is urged to attend but is not required to do so. This will be a meeting open to all Navarre CERT members and other interested parties.

  • The facts regarding the alleged offense will be stated in full detail by the accuser. Board members will be allowed to ask questions of both parties for clarification.

  • The board will then go conduct its investigation, which should include interviewing the accused and witnesses.

  • In a closed meeting of the Board, discussion and a vote will be conducted in accordance with the by-laws to determine the action to be taken.

  • The board will then return to a public session where the result of the vote will be told to both parties. The decision of the board will be final.
